Hydraulic Cylinder Calculation

Belt Pulley | Chain Sprocket |
Hydraulic system design begins with a few essential calculations. By knowing cylinder bore, rod diameter, stroke, pressure, and oil flow, it is possible to estimate output force, return force, speed, and oil volume requirement. These basic hydraulic formulas help engineers and technicians select the right cylinder, pump, and system parameters for reliable machine performance.
1. Cylinder Piston Area
Piston Area = π × D² / 4
2. Rod Area
Rod Area = π × d² / 4
3. Annular Area (Return Side Area)
Annular Area = Piston Area − Rod Area
4. Cylinder Force (Extension Force)
Force = Pressure × Piston Area
5. Return Force (Retraction Force)
Return Force = Pressure × Annular Area
6. Oil Volume for Full Stroke
Oil Volume = Area × Stroke
7. Cylinder Speed
Speed = Flow Rate / Area
8. Time for Full Stroke
Time = Stroke / Speed
These formulas are useful for:
